• Serving as one of the earliest black members of the US Marine Corps in the Montford Point Marines
• Fighting at the Battle of Iwo Jima in the 66th Supply Platoon with the 34th Marine Depot Company
• Becoming a standout pitcher for Birmingham Black Barons in baseballs ‘Negro Leagues’
• Forming a lifelong bond with baseball icon Willie Mays while playing with the Barons
• Enduring the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham in 1963 by the Ku Klux Klan
• Reciving a doctorate degree and ministering to his congregation at the Bethel Baptist Church for over 50 years
